Course Description

An increasing number of government agencies seek mediation training for their staff. In New Mexico, the 1999 legislature passed SB 262, Chapter 65, to mandate mediation training for interested state government employees. (search Bill Finder under year 2000 regular session, for SB262, Chapter 65)

Governor Johnson then signed Executive Order 00-08 to expedite this effort.

In response to this mandate, Common Ground Mediation Services created a special 50-hour government agency training, which was conducted in Santa Fe in September 2000.

We believe this training is one of the most comprehensive ones available to satisfy the present and imminent mediation needs of state agencies because it:

  • Is tailored to the needs of government agencies, with role plays and case scenarios reflecting types of cases which intra-agency mediators are likely to encounter.
  • Includes a module on effective case management specific to the ADR process;
  • Includes a segment with Advanced Mediator techniques whereby the trainee learns, for example, to incorporate a knowledge of applicable statutory authority without violating neutrality;
  • Clarifies the differences between the various ADR disciplines and
  • Strives to elevate all trainees to a completely professional standard of mediation principles and practices.
